Mixing with Your Mind By Michael Paul Stavrou. Pulling great sounds in the studio is a peculiar mix of art and science. Mike. Stavrou's unique perspective has.
Michael Stavrou clearly knows how to get great sounds on record. In his book, Stavrou collects together a generous fund of engineering tips, tackling not just mixdown, but the recording process as well. However, Stavrou breaks from the norm, by deliberately steering a course away from scientific or technical discussions, taking a relentlessly left-field approach to the subject in search of practical solutions to practical problems. Thus the chapter on compression doesn't tell you about the mechanics of a compressor, but instead discusses what order to address the compressor controls for the best sound. And if you think you can guess what order he suggests, guess again!
He also talks a lot about making records sound big on small speakers, to me this is what music is all about, it's all about colour. Making music is not for everyone.
I know what I'm talking about, I ran my own studio for years and recorded dozens of bands. His book helped me 'chase the flame' and record great drums, guitars, bass, and vocals, and most importantly mix them together. Apr 17, Joshua Key rated it it was amazing. Fantastic info for any audio engineer. Worth the price of the book. Jul 07, Jeremy rated it it was amazing. It's somewhat surprising that I downloadd the book, since it has all the makings of an internet scam: But for some reason, I believed all the hype, sent my money, and low and behold, received a book that blew my mind and stepped up my audio mixing game by several large increments.

The authors mind works in an unusual way - he may even have a touch of synesthaesia - the ability to 'see' sound, as colours or smells - but the book doesnt manage to communicate this very well. I still dont know what 'hardness' means in sound, and quite a bit of the book rests on that concept.
I personally would prefer to read a book full of technical info , tips and tricks, and then m Some interesting parts, but reads better as a personal meditation on the art of mixing than as a how-to guide. I personally would prefer to read a book full of technical info , tips and tricks, and then make my own poetic analogies for what i hear.
Dec 16, Aaron added it. This is a delightful book about resisting convention and using your own intuition when listening to music while recording it. Michael Stavrou did a great job on this book.
This book can help you get outside the box when thinking about how to visualize invisible sound waves. It has a philosophical aspect that is really easy for me to wrap my mind around. Sep 17, George Kant. Unique book in every way. It gives you an amazing insight in the mind and techniques of Paul Stavrou who is an audio engineer. It will give you more experience than any other book but most important it will make you think.
Excellent recording tips await you but it is way over priced. Much of the content applies to professional recording set ups as opposed to the one guy working with his DAW recording tracks one at a time but what you learn is invaluable. Is it worth the price tag? Dec 15, Taylor added it.
This is my "mixing bible".
Great insider info and concepts by a great engineer. I read this book for the first time while on Catalina Island years ago and although its fairly hard to find, or was, I still recommend it to anyone who loves to be behind the board. View 1 comment. Apr 06, Brendan Ingram rated it it was amazing. Pure studio gold! What a refreshing read this was, full of brilliant advice on mixing audio in a music studio. If only I had more time to get into the studio and apply all of this great advice.

Unfortunately I didn't have the time to wait for the hard copy to be delivered before leaving. So I bought the downloaded copy to read on my laptop. It was great, but after I got back home and started actually doing the exercises, I realized that hard copy would be best, so I ended up printing some of the exercises. It made me realize that I also wanted the hard copy to make it easier and so I'd have a permanent reference document. So I'm back today to order the hard copy version, too.
I'll still keep the soft copy version available for reference on the road or for quick look-ups, and will keep the hard copy close at hand as I delve into the more complex exercises.
I see this double purchase as money well spent. The cost of both versions of this book combined is in line with some other general-concept mixing books. In short, this book performs admirably and I consider it well worth the purchase price for either the hard- or soft-copy version - or both!
Very highly recommended. By jeff Sep 25, "well-done" There are a lot of books on mixing out there and I've read most my mixes still suck LOL I expected it to be good The book is well-written and loaded with valuable information The downloadable project files also show right away the power of some of these methods.
Anyone with any level of interest in mixing will find invaluable ideas and techniques, whatever their choice of DAW, but Reaper users will obviously have most to gain.
Many of the practical examples will make readers re-think what is possible with in-the-box DAW mixing. In the end it is these last attributes which make ReaMix, alongside the User Guide, an essential purchase for anyone who wants to make the most of their mixes.
