Another highlight is story narration. Anyone should be able to feel Ganga's mental confusion, after she had become close to Prabhu. Yesterday I was desperate to complete the novel and after closing it at in the morning , I didn't get any sleep.
I was arguing myself in my mind about the climax of the novel. Initially I thought the novel would have been finished saying Ganga gone back to her lonely life.
But the author's climax is the best suitable one. If the climax was in any other way, he wouldn't have got Academy award or any fame. I had never written any critics or review. But this novel inspired me to scribble here. I would definitely suggest, if you had not read the novel, please go find it somewhere.
Also I am sure once you open the novel, you will definitely be reluctant to close the book till you complete it. Jan 30, Hari Haran rated it it was amazing.
Great book. The epilogue of this book was shattering, of course, but right from the start, this was a literary phenomenon Tamils should be proud about. Jayakanthan has expressed his gall in questioning the principles men have constructed around them in the name of the society and how lives of people yearning for independence from those trifles dissolve into oblivion.
Forty years have passed since this book was written but people have not changed much yet from the characters JK envisioned in this Great book. Forty years have passed since this book was written but people have not changed much yet from the characters JK envisioned in this work, in my opinion.
This very fact vaporized the huge span between the times when this book was written and when I read it. My suggestion for any reader of this book would be to enjoy it and stop not with that but to try to shed off the prejudice we associate with the Gangas of the world. View all 4 comments. Deserves so MUCH more than random impressions hastily jotted down, but for now, this will have to do: Jayakanthan, yet again, questioning societal norms - Way before its time - A supremely disturbing conclusion, will haunt me for quite some time - Characters etched out with all their flaws: For a detailed review of this book please visit here.

I don't know when was the last time I cried but late last night I could see tears rolling down.
This novel opens on the mind set of a frustrated woman living in a male chauvinistic society and starts with a repugnance to a male character in the plot and slowly develops into a classic 20th century acceptable culture where you start liking that same male character too.
Brilliance, of a novel lies in the attachment that it fetches - Timeless classic even after 45 years since it was first published. Voila, this novel manages to achieve both out of the reader with a shattering epilogue that plays with the emotions and culture even after 45 years it was originally written. Timeless, precious, this one should go on to live for centuries.
One of those books where you keep a treasured copy for self and then download one more to gift a friend!.
Dec 14, Vijaya Raghavan rated it really liked it. This book is a slap. A slap on expecting something normal.
A slap on mediocre thought process. The characters are not with pristine morality that is expected out of all humanity but with all human weaknesses and misgivings.
