All individuals are suffering under this burden, but they also keep adding to it every moment whenever they ignore or deny that precious moment or reduce it to a means of getting to some future moment, which only exists in the mind, never in actuality.
Accept —then act. Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it Always work with it, rather against it. Make it your friend and ally, not your enemy. Realize deeply that the present moment is all you ever have. This, of course, includes the pain you suffered as a child, caused by the unconsciousness of the world into which you were born. Watch out for any sign of unhappiness in yourself, in whatever form —it may be the awakening pain-body.
Everything is shown up by being exposed to the light, and whatever is exposed to the light itself becomes light The moment you observe it, feel its energy field within you and take your attention into it. There are two levels to your pain: the pain that you create now, and the pain from the past that still lives on in your mind and body.
Be present enough to be able to watch the pain-body directly and feel its energy. It then cannot control your thinking. This is not to deny that you may encounter intense inner resistance to dis-identifying from your pain. What this means is that you have made an unhappy self out of your pain-body and believe that this mind-made fiction is who you are. In that case, unconscious fear of losing your identity will create strong resistance to any dis-identification.
In other words, you would rather be in pain —be the pain-body —than take a leap into the unknown and risk losing the familiar unhappy self. If this applies to you, observe the resistance within yourself.
But if you are fortunate enough to find someone who is intensely conscious, if you can be with them and join them in the state of presence, that can be helpful and will accelerate things. It comes in many forms: unease, worry, anxiety, nervousness, tension, dread, phobia, and so on.
This kind of psychological fear is always of something that might happen, not of something that is happening now. You are in the here and now, while your mind is in the future.
Watch out for any kind of defensiveness within yourself. What are you defending? An illusory identity, an image in your mind, a fictitious entity. By making this pattern conscious, by witnessing it, you disidentify from it. In the light of your consciousness, the unconscious pattern will then quickly dissolve. Since the ego is a derived sense of self, it needs to identify with external things. If it is conscious, it manifests as the unsettling and constant feeling of not being worthy or good enough.
If it is unconscious, it will only be felt indirectly as an intense craving, wanting and needing. In either case, people will often enter into a compulsive pursuit of ego-gratification and things to identify with in order to fill this hole they feel within.
The most common ego identifications have to do with possessions, the work you do, social status and recognition, knowledge and education, physical appearance, special abilities, relationships, personal and family history, belief systems, and often also political, nationalistic, racial, religious, and other collective identifications. Second step: thoughts are dangerous in the process of enlightenment.
They create labels. Being, however, has the advantage that it is an open concept.
It does not reduce the infinite invisible to a finite entity. It is impossible to form a mental image of it. The answer is just in front of us. Our mind is only a tool that we need for certain actions. Keeping a focus on the present is another important issue that Echkart brings into a conversation. One of the main problems the entire humanity is confronted with is the inability to engage all the attention exclusively on the NOW. Maybe it is not mandatory to enjoy the present moment, but definitely, you should acknowledge it.
You should feel the sensations that come with it, to experience it. No judging according to something that happened in the past. Make the Now the primary focus of your life. Accept all that NOW brings to your life. You have to be an outside observer of yourself and the pain will no longer control you. Once you make this statement a part of who you are, each time you become anxious about something in your future you will remember this and suddenly be more relaxed because you will understand that most of the time your mind creates scenarios that are far worse than anything that will actually happen.
And even if something bad will happen, it is not in your control to stop it, but it is in your control to accept it and to move on. The main problem of our society is that it always strives for something better in the future. People put so little emphasis on the present joy and good times and they always feel that they will be truly happy only when they will get a better job, a bigger house, a nicer car.
But when they do get those things, the joy is so small compared to what they hoped in their minds that it will be, that they start making other plans for the future. This is not to say that you cannot have goals and aspirations for the future. Of course, you can have that. The idea is not to fully identify yourself only with those goals.
You need to understand that each man has an inner journey and an outer journey as the author explains. Your inner journey has only the step that you are taking right now.
No matter at what point you are in your outer journey, your inner self should be un-shattered by the storms outside. We as humans are taught to label things so we can have access to them in an easier way. But the problem is that in this way we only see things in a superficial way, according to the labels we just set up in our minds.
Your love is not outside; it is deep within you. You can never lose it, and it cannot leave you. It is not dependent on some other body, some external form. Thinker or thinking — Which one is correct?
The last battle you must take 3. One tricky question can help you understand this book. Am I the thinker of thoughts or thoughts appear in me? The sooner you realize it, the better. An inner change requires alertness and vigilance. Fight with your self-made personality and come out a winner on the other side. Another effect of knowing your true inner-self is to understand how all creation is intertwined. In religious terms, you could say that the Supreme Being — God or whatever you want to call it — exists within every creature in the Universe , creating a relationship between all of us.
This understanding shows how life cycles do not end when a person dies since the same essence lives within millions of other people. The mind tends to continue traveling from thought to thought.
To stop this incessant activity, you need to focus all your attention on the present moment. Consciously take your thoughts away from this travel pattern and bring them back to the present moment.
