SU, Pei-hsuan ; Article: The digital representation becomes the dominant form in the modern era, because of its appealing characteristics, such as variability, transcoding, and interaction in relation to multi-ple professions and disciplines. The invention of digital devices and contents has revolution-ized the quality of sound, image, and data, the way in which they are contemplated, and the forms of art that produce activities and aesthetics concepts. The reproduction leads to the hyperreal scenes at the exhibition spaces of Sun Yun-Suan Memorial Museum in Taipei where sounds and images are produced, copied and stimulated in a way that mimetic cannot be told apart from the original data. Through bringing together its curators, historians, scholars, engineers, and design experts in data transcoding, the museum plays a role of the integration of exper-tise in creating new exhibition experiences and aesthetics, which do help visitors to realize the significance of diverse elements of converging sounds, images and data in relation to its cul-tural-heritage representation. From the early nineteenth-century, Madrid faced the effects of moderni- sation and the new modes of perception that this brought about.

Technological progress, urban reform and growth, and new forms of visual culture were introduced and implemented in the capital. This paper is divided into two large sections.

Lisa Cartwright

The first focuses on the ways in which notions of the modern city and urban renewal were expressed visually ; representations which imply distance and stability6. The second sec- tion is organised around images and issues of urban street life and therefore considers perception at ground level, that is, how city dwellers perceived, used, and interacted with their surroundings in their everyday lives. Though this study does constitute an attempt at applying such approaches to a specific time and place — Madrid in the latter decades of the nineteenth-century — it must be noted that the act of seeing the city and seeing in the city were fundamental aspects of the urban experience in the nineteenth-century9.

The complex dialectic between the past and the present, felt not only in Madrid but in other European capitals as well, was played out on the pages of the illustrated press.

Published prints exemplify the links and tensions between representations of space and uses of space, between urban identities and the images that resulted from transformation. Though those depictions in the style of costumbrismo imply a rethinking or an appropriation of the past, they also fit within a broader discourse of modernity that is clearly formulated in illustrated magazines.
