Email 3K Shares There are hundreds of IELTS preparation books on the market and choosing the right one can make the difference between studying effectively and getting not getting the score you need. Which IELTS preparation book you choose will also depend on what band score you are aiming for and which skills you want to focus on. I have no affiliation with any of the companies and will make no money from the recommendations, so you can be sure that all of my advice is fair and without bias. This book is for someone who is confident about their English level already and wants to familiarise themselves with the test format.
It is conducted in the form of a one-to-one interview with an examiner. The examiner assesses the test taker as he or she is speaking. The speaking session is also recorded for monitoring and for re-marking in case of an appeal against the score given.
A variety of accents and writing styles have been presented in test materials in order to minimise linguistic bias. Band scores are used for each language sub-skill Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. IELTS General Training is intended for those planning to undertake non-academic training or to gain work experience , or for immigration purposes.
The Speaking test may be taken on the same day or up to seven days before or after the other tests. All test takers take the same Listening and Speaking tests, while the Reading and Writing tests differ depending on whether the test taker is taking the Academic or General Training versions of the test.
Listening[ edit ] The module comprises four sections, with ten questions in each section. Section 1 has a conversation between two speakers for example, a conversation about travel arrangements Section 2 has one person speaking for example, a speech about local facilities. Sections 3 and 4 are about educational and training situations Section 3 is a conversation between two main speakers for example, a discussion between two university students, perhaps guided by a tutor Section 4 has one person speaking about an academic subject.
Then they have some time to look through the questions. The questions are in the same order as the information in the recording, so the answer to the first question will be before the answer to the second question, and so on. Each section is heard only once. At the end of the test students are given 10 minutes to transfer their answers to an answer sheet. Test takers should be careful when writing down their answers as they will lose marks for incorrect spelling and grammar.
Texts in IELTS Academic Three reading texts, which come from books, journals, magazines, newspapers and online resources written for non-specialist audiences. All the topics are of general interest to students at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
For example, timetables or notices — things a person would need to understand when living in an English-speaking country. Section 2 contains two texts, which deal with work. For example, job descriptions, contracts, training materials. Section 3 contains one long text about a topic of general interest. The text is generally descriptive, longer and more complex than the texts in Sections 1 and 2. The text will be taken from a newspaper, magazine, book or online resource. In task 1 test takers write at least words in about 20 minutes.
In task 2 test takers write at least words in about 40 minutes.
Test takers will be penalised if their answer is too short or does not relate to the topic. Answers should be written in full sentences test takers must not use notes or bullet points. Task 2: test takers discuss a point of view, argument or problem. Depending on the task, test takers may be required to present a solution to a problem, present and justify an opinion, compare and contrast evidence, opinions and implications, and evaluate and challenge ideas, evidence or an argument.
For example, writing to an accommodation officer about problems with your accommodation, writing to a new employer about problems managing your time, writing to a local newspaper about a plan to develop a local airport. To get the most out of this book it requires motivation and self-discipline, so if you are the type of person who needs a teacher to motivate you, this book might not be for you. Positives The author of this book, Sam McCarter, is recognised as an expert in his field.
Sam not only knows the test inside out, he also gives very specific techniques and advice for each question type. There are also a number of different types of writing question and each requires a different approach and this is also addressed in the book. Despite it being aimed at higher levels the book is practical and easy to understand.
Negatives I would like to see some more examples of very good answers. It would be very helpful if there were band 5 answers and then show how these could be improved and a corresponding band 8 answer. It would also be good if students were given some practical advice about where and how they can practice their writing and speaking skills at home.

This book is for someone who already has a good level of English and wants to improve their exam technique at home and score at least a band score of 7. Anyone at pre-intermediate level or below.
Positives Giving students suggested fixed phrases and collocations is a big strength of this book. There are lots of example essays and speaking sample answers which really helps students because it allows them to compare their own work with good examples.
There is a summary of the main points at the end of every chapter that helps students recall the most important information. The reasoning behind each activity is explained and linked to the exam. Negatives They have done a great job with what they have covered, but I think they could have made the book much longer and covered every aspect of the IELTS test. This book had the potential to be the definitive guide to IELTS but they missed a few things out which is unfortunate.
Difficult to find outside of the UK. There are now 10 books in this series and they provide four practice tests in each book. They are published by the same people who make the actual tests so they provide an invaluable insight into the test.
Who is it not for?
The majority of the past papers are for the Academic paper, but there are also some General Training papers in each book. Positives They are a very good reflection of the actual test so you can see exactly what is expected.
They give you a good idea what your score will be in the reading and listening tests and give you sample answers for the writing test. Negatives Often Cambridge gives sample answers that are band 4. You are not going to improve your English skills with these books and if your English level needs to improve you would be better finding a general English book.
There are lots of fake books out there, especially Cambridge It will also help you with the listening and speaking tests. Not only does it cover specific topic-related vocabulary that is common on the IELTS test, it also helps students with collocations, synonyms and paraphrasing.
Vocabulary is a key part of IELTS success and should be taken very seriously by anyone needing a high band score. Someone who has a good level of English already, but might need extra help with vocabulary.
