When and how did the universe begin? Why are we here? Is the apparent 'grand design' of our universe evidence for a benevolent creator who set things in motion? Or does science offer another explanation? In The Grand Design , the most recent scientific thinking about the mysteries of the universe is presented in language marked by both brilliance and simplicity. Model dependent realism, the multiverse, the top-down theory of cosmology, and the unified M-theory - all are revealed here. This is the first major work in nearly a decade by one of the world's greatest thinkers.

Editorial Reviews site. Hawking, the renowned Cambridge mathematician, teams up with Mlodinow, a physicist at Caltech, for a brief introduction to "the grand design" of the universe.

If this project seems ambitious for a four and a half—hour audio production, it is; however, even general readers will be able to follow along as the authors guide us through M-theories, quantum mechanics, general and special relativity, and other mind-blowing cosmological discoveries of the last century. The goal of all these journeys through the history of science is to answer some basic questions: What other universes may in fact be possible, given Richard Feynman's theory of multiple histories?

The audio version of this book is simple and scaled down. Despite an engaging and capable performance by West End stage actor Steve West, some listeners might long for more content—diagrams or video tracks to accompany and augment the lecture.

The book introduces M-Theory of the grand unifying theory of everything. But leaps of logic abound as the theory has no test ability beyond mathematics.

Assertions are made based on inferences and then built upon as though they were well established fact.

While there are fascinating facts in the scientific data, the casual reader may not always be able to distinguish fact from speculation as they are treated with equal footing throughout the book. Careful comparison of the facts will be easy enough for the determined reader, but most may choose to accept as fact Hawking's assertions about God, religion, and The Game of Life.

For this reason I give it three stars for some intellectual bias and lack of distinguishing between Hawking's school of opinion about the facts and the actual truth about the facts. I've been following quantum theory and physics for about 15 years now. This book brings together most of what has been discovered and written about in that time, AND has expanded a theory or two into a more comprehensive whole than has been previously published for the general public to digest.

I am not a mathematician, so when I say digest , I mean that understanding these laws and underlying principals sometimes takes more time and I must use other forms of thinking to grasp these concepts.

The Grand Design

For me this book was exciting because it was comprehensive without being long and getting bogged down in hard to follow science. Stephen Hawking at his best Once again Dr. Hawking has delivered the universe and the intricacies there of into our living room.

Written for the layman without the mathematics, this discourse is both intriguing and understandable. I recommend this work for anyone who wishes to read how science describes our creation and existence. God bless our scientists and researchers for their patience and cooperation.

May they continue to us keep us interested and amazed Paperback Verified download. Unless you have a strong understanding of physics and understand all the lingo that goes with it, you will not understand this book. It is not for the average person The book starts with the very first cosmologic laws of Greek philosophers, Copernic And Newton, goes to quantic mechanics and finishes with de m-theory. Of course is not possible to explain everything in detail. To whom have no idea of what is it about, the book is still the best for starting.

But one will have to consult other sources while reading I would recommend excellent internet videos and text. For those who knows the subject from other sources, it is a very comprehensive overview. I marvel at how Stephan Hawking was able to describe such complex and abstract scientific ideas and discoveries in such understandable terms.

I learned that he had a delightful sense of humor as well. This book adds insight to the limits of human perception and provides a philosophical bridge to expanded insight into possible realities of the universe. My only disappointment was when I suddenly found myself at the end of the book before I expected it.

I was so much looking forward to the next chapter One person found this helpful. Well written, but goes beyond my comprehension abilities. Maybe I just should've stuck with reading "Twinkle, twinkle little star". As an Electrical engineer from the 80's, I wish I would have read this book before going to college It paints a picture of physics and how things interact like nothing else I have read.

Mr Hawking's approach is stunningly simple and insightful.

If you like Sci-Fi or math or just have an inquisitive mind download this book and read it. You won't put it down and when you want to look smart, explain why time "slows down" as you approach the speed of like PS a great gift for a science based college student For example, if all we know is that a particle traveled from point A to point B, then it is not true that the particle took a definite path and we just don't know what it is.

Rather, that particle simultaneously took every possible path connecting the two points. Yeah, we're still trying to wrap our brains around this. The authors sum up: "No matter how thorough our observation of the present, the unobserved past, like the future, is indefinite and exists only as a spectrum of possibilities.

This model is a version of string theory, which posits that at the tiniest levels all particles are fundamentally little loops of string that vibrate at different frequencies. And, if true, all matter and energy would follow rules derived from the nature of these strings.

One consequence of this theory is that our universe is not the only one — untold numbers of cousin universes exist with different physical laws and properties. But actually, the warping of space-time does affect things we know and use, the authors point out.

That's because general relativity describes how time flows slower the closer an object is to a large mass.

Thus, depending on satellites' distances from Earth, their onboard clocks will run at slightly different speeds, which could offset position calculations unless this effect is taken into account. This law was meant to protect the poor fish from a distorted nature of reality, since bent light might show them an odd portrayal of their surroundings.

Hawking and Mlodinow bring up the incident to make the point that it is impossible to know the true nature of reality. We think we have an accurate picture of what's going on, but how would we know if we were metaphorically living in a giant fishbowl of our own, since we would never be able to see outside our own point of view to compare?
