Proportional control is a type of linear feedback control system in which a correction is applied to the controlled variable which is proportional to the difference between the desired value SP and the measured value PV. Two classic mechanical examples are the toilet bowl float proportioning valve and the fly-ball governor. The proportional control system is more complex than an on—off control system, but simpler than a proportional-integral-derivative PID control system used, for instance, in an automobile cruise control. On—off control will work for systems that do not require high accuracy or responsiveness, but is not effective for rapid and timely corrections and responses. Proportional control overcomes this by modulating the manipulated variable MV , such as a control valve , at a gain level which avoids instability, but applies correction as fast as practicable by applying the optimum quantity of proportional correction. A drawback of proportional control is that it cannot eliminate the residual SP—PV error, as it requires an error to generate a proportional output. A PI controller can be used to overcome this.

I think that all control texts should be written this way. After decentralized control, cross-feed and more advanced MIMO techniques based on inverse dynamics are introduced.
This text also covers fundamental limitations of control, which is important. This text does a very good job of presenting mathematical topics which are not covered in many control texts in a palatable way. In some places, one might get lost or overwhelmed with the math, but stick with it and things will become clear. The math in this text is quite accurate and does not overemphasize or misrepresent the singular value unlike many other "advanced" controls texts.
I had to download it for a class so cannot compare to other books on same subject. Do not download a new one! This book really explains all the needed aspects of the controls word, from a more beginner view.
It does get into some intermediate things but if I knew about this in undergrad I would have gotten it then. This was a required textbook for a intro grad controls class at Purdue and I felt it was an excellent text book.
They give you enough info on the background stuff that if you want you can find other books that will go into more detail. It was very enjoyable read and I will definitely keep this book as reference. The best book in continuous time linear control theory you could wish for. I am a professor in Control Systems, I really recommend this book for any student in this area.
I bought this book for a Post grad Controls course. The book arrived quickly and was in reasonably good condition as indicated by the 'shelf wear' description.
However, the book is very cryptic, there are very few well worked out examples. It assumes you know and remember all the background classic controls theory which was not my case. I think the Ogata is a better transition book.
